The origins of Alnwick as a settlement are dated at circa 600AD. For many centuries the major settlement in the lower basin of the Aln river was Lesbury. As late as the 12th century, Alnwick was ecclesiastically dependent upon Lesbury. Alnwick Castle has stood upon the banks of the River Aln in Northumberland for nearly nine hundred years. However its history goes back further: bronze instruments and Roman coins have been dug up, and Claudius Ptolemy (the 2nd century Egyptian geographer) referred to the river, which he thought of as the only one between the Forth and Wear. The interest of researchers in this branch are primarily of Alnwick in the late 18th century and it is interesting to read
Charles Hindley 's description of the town at this time: Dr James Hindmarsh was born in Alnwick in 1883 and the details below from the 1881 Census indicate what may have been his family; however, more information is required to confirm this connection. Household: 1881 Census Dr James Hindmarsh and two of his son practised medicine in Stockholm and the family have a strong connection with the city. He married Eva Tidblad (assumed surname) whose sister was the famous Swedish filmstar of the 1930s, Inga Tidblad.
