Overlooking Stockport Market is St Mary's Parish Church, the chancel of which dates back to the 14th century. There was an earlier church here because a charter associated with the church was witnessed by 'Mattheus Clericus de Stockport' in the 12th century. The church was originally built of red sandstone but the nave and tower were rebuilt in 1813 after a partial collapse which was blamed on a marathon bell ringing session to celebrate Nelson's Trafalgar victory! It is now distinguished by its Gothic architecture and rare stained glass. Outside, the burial ground contains some interesting gravestones, including that of John Wainwright, as well as those of Jonathan Thatcher and Martha Gardevaglia (wife of the Italian who played a large part in the introduction of silk spinning to Stockport). St. Mary's Church and Mount Tabor Methodist Church are both featured as places visited/frequented by the Hindmarsh family in Stockport in the period 1808 - 1840. Today members of this branch of the Hindmarsh family live in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. For most of its history, Salt Lake City has best been known for being the capital of Utah and the headquarters of the Church of Latter Day Saints, the Mormon Church. The city was founded in 1847 by Brigham Young. He was a native of upstate New York and was seeking a home where Mormons would not be persecuted for their beliefs. Upon entering the Great Salt Basin in the Wasatch Mountains, Young decided that Northern Utah would be the promised land for him and his followers. Emigration Canyon is the spot where Brigham Young entered the Salt Lake area, and the view here is breathtaking. Commemorating this historical point is "This Is The Place", a village restoration similar to Colonial Williamsburg. The Mormon Tabernacle is located in the heart of Salt Lake City and is the town’s key landmark.
