Famous Hindmarshes
"Let us now praise famous men, and our fathers that begat us." Eclesiasticus 44:1

The following is a short list of Hindmarshes - past and present - who may be described as "famous".

    1. Adml Sir John Hindmarsh, First Governor General of South Australia - 1785-1860

Admiral SirJohn Hindmarsh was born at Chatham, Kent in 1785. and was the son of a gunner in the Royal Navy. He won a Sword of Honour at the Battle of the Nile and served under Nelson in the Victory before, in later years, becoming the first Governor General of South Australia where several places are named after him. He is described as a real life "Hornblower" and one of the most notable members of the Hindmarsh Family. He died in London in 1860.

    2. Robert Hindmarsh founder of the "New Church of Jerusalem" 1759-1835

Robert Hindmarsh is renown for his association with the founding of the Church of the New Jerusalem on the 27 January 1788 when the first public service took place in a chapel at Great Eastcheap, London. James Hindmarsh, father of Robert and a former Methodist preacher, was chosen by lot to officiate at this inaugural service. Robert's inspiration came after reading a book by Emanuel Swedenborg entitled "Heaven and Hell". The teachings of the New Church stress individual self-realization through study of Swedenborg's interpretation of the Scriptures. Meeting regularly in London, the Hindmarsh circle began to expound the tenets of Swedenborgian theology. In 1890 a number of members broke their connection with the general convention to form a separate organization, which in 1897 took the name "General Church of the New Jerusalem." This body regarded Swedenborg's theological writings as "the very Word of the Lord revealed at his second coming." The members are known as "Swedenborgians" and there are now branches of this Church throughout the world with the largest concentration in the United States.

She entered for the first Kathleen Ferrier competition, winning the Blackpool heat against 97 other competitors. At the final she was heard by D'Oyly Carte and asked to audition. She subsequently joined the company in March 1956. During the four years that she was with them she played "Princess Ida", Mabel, Josephine, Elsie Maynard, Patience and Gianetta, and recorded Mabel, Josephine, Yum Yum and Rose Maybud. She married and left the company when expecting her first child. Lisa Hindmarsh was born in McMurray, Pennsylvania in 1962. Her father is Barry Hindmarsh a well known local musician. She currently sings with "InVoice" which has earned a reputation as Pittsburg's premiere a cappella ensemble. Audiences flock to their shows, which feature polished, upbeat performances of jazz, pop, and doo-wop classics spanning six decades. Lisa has an "alto" voice and in a recent review of one of her hit songs "Now I Know", Michael Allison had the following to say: "Not all jazz artists can paint the eloquent tapestry of musical texture that Lisa Hindmarsh has here. As the music played, I found myself captivated by the power of her voice. There is truly a memorable tone and passion that forces me to believe that she was born to sing. This album also contains a great collection of masterpieces that will charm even the most demanding of jazz aficionado's. Great music comes from the heart, and is created with a lot of love and soul. That is exactly what you will hear on this album."

He is a second row forward and played his first game for the Parramantta Eels, a New South Wales Premiership Rugby League side, in Feb 2000. He represented the "Kangaroos", the Australian Rugby league side, in 2001 and clearly has a very promising career before him.

    7. Anya Hindmarsh, International Fashion Designer - United Kingdom

Anya Hindmarsh was born in 1968. A self-taught handbag designer, she launched her first business in 1987. Superb craft skills and witty designs have won her work a devoted private clientele and formal recognition by designers Bruce Oldfield and Katharine Hamnett. Her Knightsbridge shop opened in 1993 and she now has business interests worldwide. This remarkable young lady also does a considerable amount of work for national charities.

    8. Archbishop Hincmar - France

Archbishop Hincmar was born in France in AD806 and died in AD882. A well educated man and a noted theologian, he held a number of senior positions in the Church and wielded some political influence in the government of the West Frankish Empire, ultimately as adviser to King Charles. Although the name Hincmar may be from the same root as the name Hindmarsh (See Origins below) there is no substantive evidence to date to prove that link. However, if he is related to the Hindmarsh family there is little doubt that he would qualify for a place in the "famous" category.
